Is double-glazing worth the money?

Q : I have had two quotes from a local firm for eight timber sash windows and the front door of my 1860 house. One is for overhauling and draught-proofing, and comes to £1,660; the other is for replacement with new wooden double-glazed sash units, for £8,250.
Would you recommend overhauling (they are not in too bad a condition) or replacement with double-glazed units? The only advantage with the latter I can see is a reduction in heat loss, but I suspect this may be minimal and insufficient to justify the additional cost. I seem to recall that you think double glazing is not worth the money anyway.

A: I don’t think that “double glazing is not worth the money”. What I have said is that replacing old windows with new double-glazed windows will not pay for itself in heat savings. The single most cost-effective measure anyone can undertake is good-quality draught-proofing, and you might find that this, plus the addition of secondary glazing on the inside of the existing windows, is your best bet.

Smart homes in Sweden
Swedish architectural firm Tengbom has come up with a creative new accommodation model that squeezes student living into a compact 10 sq m (108 sq. ft) footprint. The Smart Student Unit aims to offer an inexpensive and sustainable housing choice for students in Sweden that could reduce the current residency rents by half.
The cozy unit features a dining area, kitchen, study desk, a swinging lounge, elevated sleeping quarters, bathroom and a small outdoor patio. Many of the unit’s “smart” features have been built into the structure. For example the dining table and desk both double as window shutters and the wall shelves can also be used as steps which lead to the elevated loft. Read more :
Mayor plans to fix unhealthy  homes
The Healthy Homes Launch, attended by about 160 students, health and housing researcher from the University of Otago Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman, community group Every Child Counts, and current councillors and candidates; heard from President Rory McCourt on the need for minimum housing standards in the region.
“Most properties are fine, and most landlords are great. We’re concerned about the small, but significant minority; the real shockers out there. Currently a home or flat can be rented without insulation, double glazing or adequate ventilation. And unbelievably, there is no minimum room temperature for a property” said McCourt.
“This is not a wish list. It’s not luxury. It’s the basics. And it’s what any renter should be guaranteed in a first-world country” Read more :

TWO Hull charities have been given a £7,000 boost after businesses pitched in to support them with a golf day.
The Hull Families Project and Special Smiles share the pay-out, which was raised during The Golf Day at the KP Club, Pocklington.
It was the second year the competition had taken place, and it raised even more money than the previous year.
With 25 teams taking part, the event, hosted and sponsored by EYG and Claughtons, is now part of the golfer’s calendar, and a major annual fundraiser.
